Man charged after wreck

Police responding to an accident arrested a man after the vehicle's driver claimed the passenger yanked the steering wheel before the crash, a charging document states.

Matthew Lee Reichert, 21, of 119 Plantation Drive in Hagerstown, is charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, two counts of malicious destruction of property valued at more than $500 and three counts of malicious destruction property valued at less than $500, according to Washington County District Court records.

Police who responded to an accident on Oak Ridge Drive on Oct. 7 found Reichert and the female driver lying next to the vehicle in the grass. According to the charging document, Reichert and the driver had been drinking, and both were processed at Washington County Sheriff's Department.

The driver told police she and Reichert had been arguing, and he yanked the vehicle's steering wheel to the right, causing the vehicle to crash into a telephone pole. Reichert told police the driver yanked the wheel first, the charging document states.

Along with the 1994 Nissan Altima the female was driving, the telephone pole and a mailbox were damaged, the charging document states.
