October 18, 2006

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A St. Thomas, Pa., woman died and her husband was critically injured Tuesday morning when their car collided with a water truck at the intersection of Letterkenny and Siloam roads in Greene Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Nancy I. Rotz, 47, of 6702 Gehr Road, was pronounced dead at 11:16 a.m. in the emergency room of Chambersburg Hospital, Franklin County Deputy Coroner Kenneth L. Peiffer said. The cause of death was multiple blunt force trauma, he said.

Barry Lee Rotz, 44, was flown by helicopter to Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center, police said. He was in critical condition Tuesday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Police said Barry Rotz was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Prizm west on Siloam Road at 10:46 a.m. and failed to stop at the stop sign at the Letterkenny Road intersection. The car went into the path of a 2002 Sterling Actera M7500 truck driven by Lester Auchmoody, 36, of Chambersburg, which was going south on Letterkenny Road.

The water truck hit the passenger side of the vehicle where Nancy Rotz was seated, Peiffer said.

Neither Barry Rotz nor Nancy Rotz was wearing a seat belt, police said.

Auchmoody, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured, police said. Both vehicles were towed from the accident scene, police said.

The police report did not indicate whether rain was a factor in the crash.
