HCC finishes second

Hagerstown Community College was swept 30-16, 30-28 by Genessee in the championship match of the Tracy Leather Memorial Tournament at HCC's athletic complex.

Kim Snavely and Kari Toms were selected to the all-tournament team. Snavely finished Sunday's matches with 32 digs while Toms had 25 kills and 14 digs.

HCC defeated Catonsville 30-21, 30-28 in the quarterfinals and Howard 30-23, 30-27 in the semifinals to advance to the finals.

Caitlyn Selby had 18 kills whie Jess Ambrose added 45 assists for the Hawks. Sammi Snodderly finished with 23 kills and 22 digs.



Peters one of WVIAC's best

Shepherd University defensive back Dan Peters was named Defensive Player of the Week in the West Virginia Athletic conference for his performance in the Rams' 17-0 win over Charleston on Saturday.

Peters was instrumental in Shepherd's fourth shutout of the season with nine tackles, including five solos. He also returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown in the fourth period that gave the Rams a 10-0 lead.


Shepherd 3, Ohio Valley 1

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Guilherme Fonseca scored a pair of goals to lead Shepherd over Ohio Valley in a WVIAC matchup on Sunday.

Fonseca scored twice within a minute in the first half. Leighton Meredith scored for the Rams (8-5-3, 3-1-2 WVIAC) in the second half.


Shepherd 10, Ohio Valley 0

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Two area individuals helped Shepherd to its WVIAC win over Ohio Valley.

Brandie DeWitt, a South Hagerstown graduate, and Katie Moore, a Jefferson graduate, each scored goals for the Rams (7-10, 1-4). Jennifer Corkran led the scoring attach with three goals and two assists while Whitney Reed and Dana Kaufman each scored twice.


Shepherd names captains

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd University head basketball coach Ken Tyler named three players as captains for the 2006-07 season.

Former Chambersburg, Pa. High School standout Danley Shank and Yves Molina, both seniors, along with sophomore Duncan Williams, from Hedgesville, W.Va. High School, were named team captains.

The Rams will hold an intrasquad Blue-Gold scrimmage in the Butcher Center Saturday at 11 a.m. prior to the Homecoming football game.
