Mail Call

"If I were an administrator in the schools that the reporters entered without permission, I would have them arrested for trespassing. What makes you so different from any average person? What if I decided to conduct such a thing. I would be in jail where you should be. I agree with you that security needs updated but to do what you did was completely unnecessary."

"Approximately six weeks ago CSX repaired and completed the railroad crossing in Smithsburg. However, one very important thing was left out. No one seems to want to do anything about the painting of the lines separating traffic going over the tracks. I spoke to the CSX workers as they were finishing the job and they advised it was the town's responsibility. I went to Town Hall only to hear it was not within the town's limits and it was the State Highway Administration problem. I called the SHA and was advised that I could leave a complaint which I did. Six weeks has passed and nothing yet."

"I would like to congratulate our daughter, Krystal, from Emma K. Doub. She is a third-grader and she came in 13th place out of 111 third-grade girls in Washington County in the relay race held this past Saturday. We are very proud of you, Krystal. Mommy and Daddy."

"In the last five years, 179,000 jobs in the textile industry have been lost. Now George W. Bush is going to fly to Hanoi in November to expand trade with Vietnam. That's amazing. Forty years ago, Lt. Bush didn't want to go when there was a war going on."

"I think the school board should check the laws and etc. and see if they can't charge each one of the newspaper reporters that trespassed on school property and in school buildings, if they couldn't give them a subpoena for trespassing. I think that was completely wrong what they did, and I think they should be issued a subpoena if any way possible."

- Williamsport

"I recently read in your (You Said It) column about a mother who went to lunch with two friends, celebrating their 80th birthdays. Reading that sure made that day. God bless whoever sent it in. We need to hear more beautiful stories like that one."

"These school shootings - and I don't mean the ones that involve an adult, like the one in Pennsylvania, but the ones with the children bringing guns to schools - you never hear of any sanctions being brought against the parents. This kind of behavior can be stopped and should be stopped at the home. Where are the parents?"

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling about the school security article that's been in the paper lately. I think it's clear ridiculous to keep advertising about the security, whenever you're inviting people to come in and do that stuff. I'm a concerned parent, and I don't appreciate somebody trying to get violence started in the schools. Why couldn't you have a private meeting with the school board instead of advertising this all over the front of the paper?"

- Hagerstown

"I think our schools here in Washington County need to get security guards at the front entrance and have all the doors locked on these schools. The BOE has money for everything else - let them spend a little extra to protect our children. I would like to thank The Herald-Mail reporters for going into these schools and proving that they're not safe. That was a good job, and I thank them for that."

"Last Tuesday, Oct. 3, my friend and I were in a car accident in Greencastle. Thank God, everyone was OK. I would like to take a moment and thank all the rescue workers and all the kind people who stopped and helped us, and I would like to thank the lady who brought juice boxes to our little girls. It's just nice to know that there are still kind people out there."

"In reference to The Herald-Mail article, Tuesday, Oct. 10, 'error to cost $6,700' to resend flush tax: Last year they screwed up, this year they screwed up, and I think it's absurd that the state will have to pick up the cost of that $6,700 to re-bill that. That computer error - don't they test sample after the computer's done running all that? The state should not have to pick that up. Herald-Mail, great article. Thanks."

- Leitersburg

"I'm surprised that someone would call in and criticize the newspaper for doing a story and an expose on how easy to get into our county schools. I applaud the newspaper for showing us this. As a parent who has a child in Boonsboro Middle School, I've often thought how easy it was for someone to get into that school and just walk through unnoticed. The office isn't at the front of the building. It seems like that's a real issue in many schools. "
