PTA organizations in Washington County will host Washington County Board of Education candidates today from 7 to 9 p.m. in the library at South Hagerstown High School.

People are invited to meet the six candidates. Those attending will have the opportunity to speak informally with the candidates and to submit written questions.

Light refreshments will be served.

Chamber series

The Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce's "Decision '06" series includes three political events this week at the Four Points Sheraton on Dual Highway.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Martin O'Malley will be at a lunch event Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $25 per person.

Washington County Commissioner candidates are scheduled to be at a forum Thursday from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Tickets cost $10 each.

On Friday, U.S. Senate candidates Michael Steele, a Republican, and Ben Cardin, a Democrat, will be at a lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The cost to attend is $25 per person.

In all three cases, proceeds will not go to the candidates, the chamber noted.

Building Community candidates forum

Candidates in five local election races are scheduled to be at a forum sponsored by Building Community.

The forum will be Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Jay's Lounge at the Grand Venice Hotel on Dual Highway in Hagerstown.

By Friday, seven of the 10 Washington County Commissioner candidates had accepted Building Community's invitation.

Also scheduled to attend are three of the six Washington County Board of Education candidates; both Washington County state's attorney candidates; Douglas W. Mullendore, the Democratic candidate for Washington County sheriff; and Brian K. Grim, a Democrat running for state delegate in Subdistrict 1C.

U.S. Senate candidate Ben Cardin and Maryland gubernatorial candidate Martin O'Malley, both Democrats, have pledged to send representatives.

Tickets cost $10, which includes light refreshments and a cash bar. Contact Chris Baker at or buy tickets at the door.

Net proceeds will be divided between the Democratic and Republican central committees of Washington County.
