Let Cromer vote by remote

October 06, 2006

If ever there were an issue that could be classified as a "no-brainer," it's the question of whether Hagerstown Councilwoman Kelly Cromer should be allowed to take part in council meetings while recovering at home from back surgery.

Of course she should. Because the meetings are televised, Cromer can watch them from home and participate via the same sort of conference-call hook-up that many businesses use.

That said, we agree with City Attorney Mark Boyer that a broader policy on how absent members can participate needs more study.

Obviously, Cromer cannot come to City Hall without risking her health and needs this accommodation. Whether the council wants to offer the same to other members who are absent because they're on family vacations is another matter.
