Concert series starts Friday

The Hagerstown Community Concert Association is beginning a diverse 48th season this Friday with the new musical group 4Score at The Maryland Theatre, says Joann Fillingham, publicity chairwoman for the association.

4Score, four singers backed by three musicians, will perform classics from Broadway shows and Hollywood movie musicals, and songs from The Beatles, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers and from harmony groups such as The Andrew Sisters and The Mills Brothers.

The other performers scheduled at The Maryland Theatre in downtown Hagerstown as part of the concert series are Bay Street Brassworks, pianist Alpin Hong and The Four Freshmen.

For the first time, the association will sell tickets to individual concerts, Fillingham says. This is because in the past members have had guests in town who want to go to the concert or people have moved into the community after the series had begun, she says.

But buying a subscription to the four-concert series allows members to take advantage of a reciprocal agreement with community concert associations in Chambersburg, Pa.; Waynesboro, Pa.; Gettysburg, Pa.; and Westminster, Md., Fillingham says.

The season ticket acts as a free pass to any of the regularly scheduled performances those groups are having.

The schedule for this season's Hagerstown Community Concert Association is:

· Friday, Oct. 6: 4Score

· Thursday, Nov. 30: Bay Street Brassworks. This group from Baltimore features a trombone, French horn, tuba and two trumpets. They perform original pieces as well as classical compositions, show tunes, Dixieland music and more.

· Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007: award-winning pianist Alpin Hong, who has been performing since age 10 and has performed at Carnegie Hall.

· Tuesday, April 17, 2007: The Four Freshmen, a harmony group performing their original hits and favorites.
