Bail set for man charged in altercation

A man accused of firing two shots into the air during an altercation with his estranged wife was in Washington County Detention Center Monday night, a deputy said.

Bail for Donny M. Verece, 31, of 34 West Church Street in Hagerstown, was set at $400,000. According to Washington County District Court records, he was charged with first-degree assault, two counts of reckless endangerment, carrying a handgun, illegal possession of a firearm, second-degree assault, discharging a firearm within city limits and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

According to a charging document, witnesses told Hagerstown Police Department officers that Verece fired two shots into the air after arguing with his estranged wife on Berkson Avenue, near where his new girlfriend lives, after 5 p.m. Sunday. He allegedly then pointed the handgun at another woman and the woman's niece.

When police confronted Verece, he had no weapons with him, the charging document states.


Verece previously was convicted of rape, the charging document states.

Boy held on sexual assault charges

A 16-year-old boy who allegedly tried to sodomize an 8-year-old family friend was at Washington County Detention Center Monday night, a deputy said.

According to a Washington County District Court charging document, the boy, of West North Avenue in Hagerstown, allegedly pulled the girl's pants down and tried to sodomize her while she was trying to sleep at about 2:30 a.m. Sept. 23 at her home on Berkson Avenue.

The girl told her parents, and she told police the boy had assaulted her about one week earlier and threatened to rape her, the charging document states.

The boy was charged with attempted second-degree sex offense, attempted sodomy, two counts of third-degree sex offense and two counts of second-degree assault.
