4-H pig sale takes in $29,578

The 64th Annual Franklin County 4-H Pig Club Show and Sale was held at the Greencastle Livestock Market on Saturday, Aug. 12, with 78 4-H project animals shown and sold.

The 78 head of pork-on-the-hoof totaled 18,778 pounds with an average weight of 241 pounds and sold for a total sale value of $29,578.88 or an average of $1.27 cents per pound.

The Grand Champion pig, weighing 260 pounds, was shown by Jena Lehman, of Greencastle, Pa., and was purchased by Trootwood Stables for $2.00 a pound.

The Reserve Champion, shown by Samuel Wingert of St Thomas, Pa., weighed in at 258 pounds and was bought by Reinecker Ag Products for $1.85 a pound.


In the pen-of-two class, champion honors went to Jared McIntire, of Chambersburg, Pa., and was purchased by Trottwood Stables for $1.00 a pound.

Reserve Champion honors went to Lora Wenger, of Newburg, Pa., and was purchased by Dream Farms & Future Vision, Dr. Larry Sylvester, for $2.00 a pound.

In the Junior Fitting and Showing class, Shayla Kline, of Shippensburg, Pa., was declared Grand Champion, while Jenna Lehman, of Greencastle, was granted Reserve Champion honors.

In the Senior division, Kristina Dice, of Chambersburg, was declared Grand Champion while Matthew Stahl, of Mercersburg, Pa., was declared Reserve Champion.

The show was judged by Dave Reinecker from York Springs, Pa. Roundup trophies were sponsored by AgChoice Farm Credit of Chambersburg while ribbons and rosettes were provided by the Franklin County 4-H Pig Club.
