Work camp repair teams coming to area

October 02, 2006

As many as 70 local residents will benefit from the Antietam Workcamp that is coming to Williamsport from July 22 to 28, 2007.

The work camp, consisting of 400 adult and teenage volunteers, will provide free home repairs to elderly, handicapped and low-income county residents through the Group Workcamps Foundation program.

The program is sponsored locally by St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Williamsport Churches, South County Churches and other organizations, including REACH Caregivers Inc.

At each work camp, teenagers and adults - all members of church youth groups - volunteer a week of their time to repair homes throughout the community. This represents about 12,000 hours of volunteer labor - worth at least $80,000 - to the community.

The local work camp will be housed at Williamsport High School, with participants sleeping on classroom floors, eating in the cafeteria and participating in evening programs in the gym.

Repairs offered through the work camp include interior and exterior painting, weatherization, and porch and wheelchair ramp construction.
