Fire safety tips

September 28, 2006

According to Hagerstown Fire Department fire prevention educator Mike Weller, unattended cooking is the No. 1 cause of fire in the city.

"Prevent cooking fires: Watch what you heat," is the National Fire Protection Association's theme for Fire Prevention Week, which starts Oct. 8.

To prevent or control possible fires:

· Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Make sure the device's pressure gauge indicates it is operational.

· Cover the fire with a lid or pan.

· If the fire cannot be controlled within 30 seconds, leave the scene and call 911.

· Have a safety plan and meeting place ready.

· Do not rely on flour or baking soda to douse a fire.

· Do not spray a grease fire with water.

· Do not pick up a pan or dish that has caught fire.

· Do not panic.
