Mail Call

September 26, 2006

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"Since when can a certain town dictate who can live there and who cannot? I am sure as long as the prison has been on Sharpsburg Pike, there has also been natives of Hagerstown committing crimes. If a person is on parole, he is being supervised. Have all of you checked to see if any crimes committed are by people from the prison."

- Maugansville

"Rick Mundey, a former center fielder for the Chicago Cubs and a Marine Corps reservist, rescued the American flag from being burned by two protesters during a 1976 baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Yet our leaders in Washington will not vote to make it against the law for buring the flag. Talk about getting out of Iraq, maybe we should get out of Washington."

- Boonsboro

"Most scholars on Iraq will tell you that the invasion was a mistake. Not just for the death, destruction and the deficit, but the fact that we are now hated by the mainstream moderate Muslims, such as in Egypt. President Bush will go down in history as one of the worst."

"Yesterday my mother went out to lunch with her two friends. All three were celebrating their 80th birthday. They all are beautiful. All three live in this community. All three have been married for 60 years. All three live with their beloved husbands. All three have been friends for 50 years. All three were pregnant at the same time. All three had three children - three girls, three boys, three girls. All three know love, friendship and happiness. Isn't this a beautiful story? I knew your readers would love it. Now, I know all three are wondering who called this in - which daughter, which son. We are not telling. Happy birthday, Catherine, Gloria and Mary Jane."

"I'm getting tired of all these right-wing excuses for the 'Mission accomplished' banner. Mr. Bush stood there in his G suit with his helmet tucked under his arm and took all the glory. Why wouldn't he explain then that this was Abe Lincoln's banner?"

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling in about the comment in the paper blaming Ronald Reagan for the 9/11 attack. That is so hilarious. They said they're sick and tired of blaming Clinton for 9/11. The real culprit in all this has to be Jimmy Carter. He's the one who started the whole thing, and he still to this day goes overseas and still bashes the Americans and President Bush."

- Sharpsburg

"I see where the county is going nationwide to hunt for a new administrator. I think they should look in Washington County, and Washington County only. We have plenty of educated men, educated people in general who can handle that job, and I think the job should be given to someone who lives in Washington County and knows the area, and not nationwide like they do for school principals and everything else. Keep it local."

- Williamsport

"This is to the lady who says she won't take her kids to City Park anymore, because of the wild cats. That's about the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard in my life. Feral cats don't just go around attacking people. They run; they hide from people, and you're lucky if you even see them. I think you should be more worried about the dogs that are walking around that people don't have their leash on. Their dogs come out in the street. Why don't you worry about that instead?"

- Hagerstown

"I have a question for Mr. Chavez and the liberals of this country. How many people are dying to get into Venezuela vs. the U.S.?"

- Sharpsburg

"I have been feeding more than 20 wild cats for more than 23 years at my Clear Spring residence. If I have learned anything, it is that feral cats will (not come) close to a human being. They will only come out to feed when you are out of sight. I have managed to spay and neuter a few of them, but trying to trap them is like trying to catch a roadrunner bird - but I keep trying."

- Clear Spring

"Yes, I do read to my granddaughter, and yes, the cartoons on Channel 39 are disgusting. I do have an 'off' button, but my granddaughter does like to watch cartoons. I'm sure you liked to watch cartoons when you were a little child, too, so mind your own business."

"I'm just calling in reference to this Morris trial. I'm just wondering what they are going to do next with this guy's trial. First he gets sent down the road, gets all these luxuries and he's put on solitary, and it goes on and on. He had his trial delayed for this or for that, now he gets his trial moved out of the county. Then he says he doesn't remember what happened. This is sounding funnier and funnier to me. What's next?"

- Hagerstown

"I see in today's Mail Call that the average price is gasoline is $2.50. How about $2.29 in Chambersburg and $2.29 in Waynesboro and Greencastle yesterday? That's a heck of a big difference."
