Firefighters conducting boot drive for MDA

In observance of the partnership between International Association of Fire Fighters and the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Hagerstown professional firefighters Local 1605 will conduct a Fill-the-Boot drive from Oct. 12 to 14 to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Proceeds raised during the campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA's outpatient clinics for people with more than 40 neuromuscular diseases, summer camp for ages 6 to 21, assistance with the purchase and repair of wheelchairs and leg braces, and assistance with the purchase of communication devices.

Members of IAFF Hagerstown Local 1605 will be at various businesses from Oct. 12 to 14 throughout the day asking shoppers to drop donations into firefighter boots.

Opera Appreciation Class offered at HCC

Hagerstown Community College's Opera Appreciation class returns for a 10th season of opera interpretation with professor Joe Marschner.

This fall, participants can learn about and attend the Baltimore Opera Company's production of "The Siege of Corinth" by Gioachino Rossini on Sunday, Oct. 22, and "Nabucco" by Giuseppe Verdi on Sunday, Nov. 19.

Participants will attend two introductory lectures discussing the story line, composer, background of the opera and the performers. The fee of $105 includes registration, lectures (held on the HCC campus), Grand Tier opera tickets and transportation to the Lyric Opera House for a matinee performance.

Smithsburg High Class of '91 gathering

The Smithsburg High School Class of 1991 will hold its 15th anniversary reunion Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Smithsburg Fire Hall.

The event will include a social hour at 6 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner. Reservations are required.

There will also be an informal get-together Friday, Oct. 20, at the Corner Pub in Hagerstown. Classmates are asked to meet at 8 p.m.

Smithsburg High School's homecoming game begins at 2 p.m. Saturday. Classmates are encouraged to attend.
