Mummers parade a tradition

September 24, 2006

It's touted as one of the largest nighttime parades on the East Coast. Every Halloween weekend, the Alsatia Mummers Parade through downtown Hagerstown draws about 10,000 participants and even more spectators.

A Hagerstown tradition since the early 20th century, the parade snakes down a Potomac Street that Jim McCleaf, parade president, describes as "inundated with people."

The 82nd annual parade is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Oct. 28, he said.

Applications for parade units are available from the Alsatia Club. Those wishing more information may call the club at 301-739-2044 or McCleaf at 301-3944.

Tickets for reserved seating go on sale through The Maryland Theatre at 21-27 S. Potomac St. in Hagerstown.

Tickets are $10 along the parade route and $5 for bleacher seats at Bester Elementary School.

Tickets may be purchased at the theater's Web site at www.mdtheatre.org.
