History: Hancock traces its beginnings to an American Indian crossing at the Potomac River. European settlers began to arrive in the 1730s. Joseph Hancock, a ferryman who hauled passengers and commerce across the Potomac River, formally laid out a town in 1749. It was incorporated in 1853.
