State Parks

One mile east of Md. 67 on Gapland Road south of Boonsboro, this park offers hiking and picnicking and a century-old stone monument dedicated to war correspondents.


Eight miles east of Hagerstown off U.S. 40, this park offers picnicking, camping, interpretive programs, nature trails on an eight-mile trail system and concessions. A lake provides swimming, fishing and boating.

South Mountain

The "park" runs along the ridge of South Mountain from Pen Mar to Weaverton, linking many parks and the Appalachian Trail. Camping is limited to shelters along the trail.


The first state battlefield, South Mountain State Battlefield, is in this park.

Washington Monument

Four miles east of Boonsboro on the county line, this park is home to the first monument built in honor of George Washington. It also offers camping, picnicking, shelter and access to the Appalachian Trail.
