Salute to Independence draws a crowd

September 24, 2006

Every year, the Maryland Symphony Orchestra performs a concert of patriotic music for a crowd of at least 25,000 at Antietam National Battlefield in connection with the nation's Fourth of July celebration.

People arrive early with blankets, lawn chairs, tents and picnic meals and make a day of it. The tradition includes the firing of howitzers as the symphony plays Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" and a fireworks finale.

The 2007 Salute to Independence concert is planned for July 7 at 7:30 p.m.
