Formerly known as Leadership Hagerstown, Leadership Washington County's main focus is a program that gathers midlevel professionals in the for-profit and nonprofit sectors for a leadership program.

For the nine-month program, which runs from September to June, participants meet once a month to discuss issues including business and economic development, education, culture and quality of life and health and human services.

The program's goal is to make the participants stronger and more active leaders in the community.

The cost to take part is $1,200, typically paid by participants' employers.

Other programs include a similar leadership program for high school students, a CEO orientation program and a program that matches leadership program graduates with the boards of directors of nonprofit organizations in the community.

The program was created in 1987 and formerly was under the auspices of the Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce.

Executive director is Cindy Kalkbrenner.
