Library was one of first chartered in country

September 24, 2006

Washington County residents seeking information or books to read may visit the Washington County Free Library or one of seven branches.

The library, chartered in 1898, is the oldest chartered county library system in the United States.

The library arguably had the world's first bookmobile, started in 1905 by librarian Mary Titcomb, in a horse-drawn wagon.

The Western Maryland Room at the 100 S. Potomac St. library location has a large collection of historical and genealogical materials covering the area.

The hours of the 100 S. Potomac St. library are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

For more information, call the library at 301-739-3250 or check the library's Web site at www.washcolibrary.org.
