Heart Walk is scheduled for Sunday in Greencastle, Pa.

September 22, 2006

American Heart Association's Heart Walk team leaders recently met this summer for a kickoff event leading up to this year's walk for Franklin and Fulton counties.

The four-mile fundraising walk is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, at Tayamentasachta Environmental Center in Greencastle, Pa. The event goal is $130,000.

Corporate sponsors, team leaders and top walkers gathered to learn about the event's role in fighting cardiovascular diseases and stroke. This year's event chairman is Lorna Duphiney Edmundson, president of Wilson College.

Guest presenter was Cynthia Green, whose 1-year-old son, Alexander "Xander" Green, was born with tetrology of Fallot, one of 35 recognized heart defects. Open-heart surgery to repair four heart defects has made it possible for Xander to lead a normal and active life. He will represent many walkers who are heart disease and stroke survivors. Survivors can be recognized by their red caps, demonstrating that they are fighting back against heart disease and stroke.

New teams or individual walkers also may register online at www.heartwalk.kintera.org/franklinfultonpa.

The event is presented locally by World Kitchen Inc., the Barmont-Bryner family and TB Woods Inc.

The kickoff was sponsored by 7 P's Deli & Catering.
