Area legislators to gather in Chambersburg today

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Wilson College is hosting the 19th annual Quad State Legislative Conference today with elected officials from Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania hearing presentations on emergency preparedness for avian influenza.

In the morning sessions, conference legislators will hear presentations from state and local officials about avian flu and steps each state is taking to prepare for any outbreak of the disease, according to a press release from Pennsylvania state Rep. Rob Kauffman, R-Franklin/Cumberland. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Deputy Secretary Russell Redding will discuss Pennsylvania's readiness program.

In addition to emergency preparedness, other topics relating to avian flu include biology of the virus, surveillance and testing and public safety. Speakers on the subject include West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety Cabinet Secretary James E. Spears.

Afternoon topics include a status report on Interstate 81 projects and tourism, according to Kauffman's office.

The conference is scheduled to begin at 8:30 this morning.
