Daylong event features music, chili

September 21, 2006|by TIFFANY ARNOLD

Reality show rockers The Blue Sky Traffic will close out the Hagerstown Suns Chili Cook-Off & Music Festival on Saturday at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown.

The event - part cooking contest, part music festival - also will feature performances by Ledbetter Heights, Complete Circle, The Freddie Long Band and Ivy Rowe. The five were whittled from about 30 band submissions, said organizer Joel Pagliaro, director of promotions and special events for the Hagerstown Suns.

About 2,000 people are expected to attend this year, Pagliaro said. Proceeds will go to the Community Free Clinic and the Walnut Street Community Health Center.

The Blue Sky Traffic has piqued a lot of local interest ever since the band, three 20-somethings from Smithsburg, filmed a live recording in Los Angeles for NBC's online reality show "Star Tomorrow."

"Star Tomorrow" is a talent competition that began in July with 100 bands from across the United States. As with most reality shows, the bands' fates are determined by the viewers, who vote online. NBC network officials said The Blue Sky Traffic will be among the 24 remaining bands in the next round, which begins Monday, Sept. 25. Top prize is a recording contract with David Foster, who has produced songs for Celine Dion and Whitney Houston.

At the cook-off, music fans will get a hint of what's next for Blue Sky, as the band is working on its first album. The band's 45-minute set likely will include the seldom heard love song "Blowing Out West" and "1983, A Robot I Should Be," a song about time travel and about "spray-painting the White House half black," said the band's guitarist and frontman (and unofficial jokester) Justin Kalk, 22.

Music clips are available at www.startomorrow.com and on the band's Web page, Myspace.com/TheBlueSkyTraffic. For more information about the chili cook-off, visit www.sunschilicookoff.com.
