Farmer honored for preservation

September 20, 2006|by JENNIFER FITCH

ZULLINGER, PA. - Richard Scott was extolled on Monday for donating more than 87 acres of active farmland in Washington Township to Franklin County, Pa., through its agricultural preservation program.

Others have followed, but Scott's donation was the first, County Commissioner G. Warren Elliott said.

In other cases, the county has paid farmers to place perpetual easements on their land that prevent it from being developed.

The county will soon celebrate placing its 10,000th acre into preservation. The program began in 1990.
