BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - CSX Transportation plans to clean up an old loadout facility in Berkeley Springs that has potential petroleum contamination, the Department of Environmental Protection said last week.
The company has submitted an application for the work to the DEP.
The 3.37-acre site at 107 Williams St. once was used as a raw lumber and wood pulp handling yard, according to a DEP news release.
No areas of concern have been identified but there could be petroleum contamination because of the site's previous use, the DEP said. The voluntary remediation agreement will include provision for identifying human health and ecological risks associated with current and potential future uses of the site in order to establish appropriate cleanup standards.
Questions regarding the application should be directed to Patty Hickman, project manager, WV DEP-OER, 131 A Peninsula St., Wheeling, WV, 304-238-1220.
