Valley Mall store owner assaulted, robbed

September 14, 2006|by PEPPER BALLARD

The owner of Urban Exchange at Valley Mall was assaulted and robbed of about $800 worth of clothes at about noon Wednesday, Washington County Sheriff's Department Investigator Chris Weaver said.

The owner tried to usher four men out of his store at about noon after he recognized two members of the group who he alleged tried to steal from him before, Weaver said.

"As he was trying to usher them out, they pushed him to the ground," Weaver said, adding that the owner struck his head and was taken to Washington County Hospital.

"The guys grabbed a handful of clothes and ran out of the mall," he said.

Weaver said the owner estimated the clothes were worth $800.

The men were seen leaving the mall by Allegany Optical, Weaver said. According to a Washington County Sheriff's Department press release, the men fled in a gray Jeep Cherokee that was reported stolen to the Hagerstown Police Department as the robbery was taking place inside the mall.

The owner said the men were black and that one of the men was wearing a gray-and-blue hooded sweat shirt and another man had possible dreadlocks or braids, Weaver said.

Weaver asks anyone with information about the crime to call him at 240-313-2186.
