Del. Richard B. Weldon, R-Washington/Frederick, was headed toward a primary victory Tuesday night over challenger Roy Burke in legislative subdistrict 3B, according to early returns that gave him an edge of 1,332 to 272.

Weldon, 47, of Brunswick, Md., was first elected to the House of Delegates in 2002 and serves on the House Health and Government Operations Committee.

Burke, 35, of Brunswick, is a freight manager for A&P Inc.

In the Nov. 7 general election, Weldon will face former Burkittsville Mayor Paul Gilligan, 60, who ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.
