City, Mikulski recognize Hispanic Heritage Month

September 13, 2006

Hagerstown Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II read aloud a proclamation Tuesday noting that Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month.

Celebrated nationally since 1968, Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes the 42 million Hispanic people who call America home, including 300,000 in Maryland. The city's proclamation also noted the economic and cultural contributions Hispanics have made and continue to make.

A representative of U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, D-Md., also read aloud a letter noting the month. The theme of this year's celebration is, "Our rich culture contributing to America's future."

Both Mikulski's letter and the city's proclamation were presented to Sila Alegret-Bartel, who helped found the Western Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, which covers Montgomery, Frederick and Washington counties.
