Dragway upgrades planned

September 13, 2006|by ANDREW SCHOTZ

The owner of Mason Dixon Dragway said Monday that he plans to widen the track and put in a concrete barrier next year.

Elmer Wachter, who owns and operates the dragway, said the track is 43 feet wide, with 10 feet of grass on either side.

In November 2007, the track will be widened to 60 feet. He said a concrete barrier will stand between the track and the guardrail.

Wachter answered questions about the track's future on Monday after a story about a proposed Allegany County drag strip in Saturday's Cumberland Times-News mentioned "the reported closing" of Mason Dixon Dragway "later this year."

"Absolutely not," Wachter said, noting that he already has booked 2007 events.

Dean Yatchyshyn, the owner of Cresap Automotive Machine, in Cumberland, the source in the story of the "reported closing," told The Morning Herald on Monday that it was an ongoing rumor he has heard for about a year, but he doesn't remember who told him.
