Cast your ballot today

September 12, 2006

The National Weather Service says that today should be partly cloudy, with a high temperature near 72. If that's not perfect weather for Election Day, it is close enough.

If you are registered to vote in the Maryland primary, we urge you to go to the polls, to make your voice heard on the issues that face Washington County, Maryland and the nation.

The more people who vote, the less likely it is that special interests will use low turnouts to manipulate elections to their advantage.

But just as valid a reason to vote is the fact that so many have died to provide that right. On many occasions, we have recalled the experience of George Washington's troops in 1777-78, when they spent the winter at Valley Forge, Pa.

Many soldiers' only food was a mixture of water and flour and many had no boots or blankets to shelter them from the snow. Disease claimed 2,000 that winter and supplies were so scarce that some soldiers' families came to Valley Forge to help run the camp.

They suffered greatly from hardships that almost certainly shortened the lives of those who survived. But most did not desert, because they knew what they were fighting for - the freedom to elect their own leaders.

What a shame it would be to dishonor the sacrifices of those and all the other veterans who came after them by acting is if what they fought and died for doesn't make a difference.

Today is your day to make a difference, by exercising the right that was purchased at such a great price.
