HCC class offerings

Spanish, Italian

The Hagerstown Community College Center for Continuing Education has a number of noncredit Spanish and Italian classes available.

· Two classes of Community Spanish will be offered, beginning Sept. 13 and 14. No prior knowledge of Spanish is required.

· Community Spanish Continues will begin Sept. 12 and is a review for students who have limited Spanish-speaking skills.

· Spanish for Social Services begins Oct. 13. No prior knowledge of Spanish is needed for this class.

· Stay in Touch with Spanish begins Oct. 9, and is for students who have completed the two parts of Community Spanish.

· Spanish for Medical Professionals begins Oct. 4. No prior knowledge of Spanish is required.

These courses are taught by Elsa Proverbio-Bradford.

· An Italian-Beginning course will be offered beginning Sept. 14, followed by Stay in Touch with Italian 3 beginning Oct. 9. This course is for those who have a basic knowledge of Italian and would like to practice their skills. Proverbio-Bradford also instructs these courses.

Healthy living series planned

Hagerstown Community College Center for Continuing Education will present a series of healthy living courses that will allow students to stay healthy with the seasons.

During the sessions, students will learn the associations of each season according to Chinese medicine, including color, sound, emotion and organ function. Each class will also have practical tips and Chinese medical stretching exercises.

· "Autumn: The Lungs and Colon, Grief and Gratitude" will be Sept. 12.

· "Winter: Kidneys and Bladder, Fear and Trust" will be Oct. 10.

· "Spring: Liver and Gall Bladder, Anger and Creativity" will be Nov. 14.

· "Summer: Heart and Small Intestines, Joy and Sadness; Communications" and also "Late Summer: Spleen and Stomach, Worry and Being Grounded" will both be Dec. 12.

All classes will be held from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. at the HCC Valley Mall Center. Fee is $20.

Pharmacy technician class offered

Hagerstown Community College Center for Continuing Education is offering a comprehensive 50-hour course to prepare students to take the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination and enter the pharmacy technician career field.

Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions, and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will also learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding and dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control, billing and reimbursements.

The course will begin Sept. 18 and run through Feb. 19.
