You Said It

"If you are in need of a ride to your voting polling place for either this Tuesday's Washington County primary election or the Nov. 7 general election, please contact Linn Hendershot at 301-766-9155 or 301-991-4238. Your party affiliation is not an issue. Please vote."

"To the person asking The Herald-Mail to do something constructive on two items, price of gas in the Tri-State area and the sale of items. The Energy Information Administration (www.eia.doe.gov) agency has extensive information on why the difference in gas prices across the nation (very informative). If you don't have a computer, you can go to the library and use one for free. On the issue of sales, an educated consumer is the best defense. Understand the gimmicks used to get you into their store (nearly all are regulated by federal and state laws) and what is not legal such as bait and switch."

"Learn the facts about the terrorist events leading up to the 9/11/2001 attack on the World Trade Center. ABC is presenting a documentary series on Sunday and Monday (today) showing the events that started several years before 9/11 and the actions or lack of action taken by our national leadership. This is a must program to watch to get the facts about the start of the war on terrorism."

"This is in reference to the Williamsport pool issue. Mr. Deal, you can't be serious about (the town) swimming pool. If you're losing money like you say, perhaps it's a management issue. Ask the county for more money - our money, mind you - I guess I'm a little confused here. We can't get our roads fixed, can't seem to get the county commissioners to put a cap on our taxes because of 'smart growth,' and now you want our money for your pool. I'd be willing to bet that the majority of taxpayers in this county would be against that."

"Iraq is spinning into a civil war, a fact that it's been told last week by the Bush administration's own people at the Pentagon. Afghanistan is spiraling out of control. The Taliban is taking back over. They've had a record opium harvest this year - the biggest ever. President Bush is failing miserably in his foreign policy. All you people that voted for Bush, I ask you, do you still think he knows what he's doing?"

"The Republicans say we're much safer under their leadership. My country was attacked under their leadership, and the commander in chief gave orders to invade a country that had nothing to do with 9/11. Par for the course."

"I was calling because I have a neighbor who obviously needs to have their septic tank pumped out. It's overflowing, it smells terrible and now they're running their drain water out into the road. I was hoping that someone might be able to give me some advice as to who to call or how to report this."

"I'm calling about this thing on the sports page. That's the wrong number. Barry Bonds doesn't have 730 (home runs.) I figure the last five years, take about 150 off. He has about 580. It's just a shame that he had to cheat like that, and disgrace great players like Henry Aaron and Babe Ruth."

"On Tuesday, Sept. 5, I was heading into town on Washington Street, and as usual, some of the speed demons were heading in the same way. What really made me laugh, radar was set up there near Winter Street. The one car that went flying past me, they were in a real big hurry until that city policeman flagged them down. I hope they threw the book at that crowd. Congratulations, City Police, and keep up the good work."

"I saw on Fox News where they were talking about Katrina, and that the governor of Louisiana, two different times, rejected help from the federal government, except for the financial help, and that several times, the mayor of New Orleans was told to evacuate. This was all documented; they showed the quotes on TV. There was school buses setting all over the place empty and no one was evacuating. He waited until the day of the storm to decide to evacuate instead of a day earlier. I noticed that none of the mainstream media even brought this up. I didn't see it in this paper either, and I didn't see it on any of the three big newscasts."

"On Tuesday, Sept. 5, I saw a bus at the intersection of U.S. 11 and Halfway Boulevard. The children were leaning out the window, they were throwing pencils at the cars in the adjoining lane. Is this the type of behavior we expect from the children in our schools?"

"Thumbs up to the Maryland State Police because they're not riding bicycles, they're riding in their cars. They're doing a better job than Hagerstown City Police. They sit around, look at cameras - not walking the beat like they used to do in the '70s."

- Hagerstown

"Thank you, Washington County Roads Department and Gary Rohrer. It sure is a pleasure to drive South Colonial Drive and Mount Aetna Road."
