Volunteers will be honored at luncheon

The City of Hagerstown will hold a luncheon in November to recognize appointed volunteers serving on city committees.

The 2006 Citizen Recognition Award/Board and Commissions Luncheon is scheduled for Nov. 17 at noon at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts.

Plaques to be placed at former jail site

Two plaques memorializing the old Washington County jail will be installed at the former jail site on the corner of Jonathan and Church streets in Hagerstown.

Brian Robinson, director of Each One Teach One, which is part of the African American Historical Association of Western Maryland, asked that the City of Hagerstown install the plaques, a brick sidewalk and landscaping.

The owner of the site, Jiffy Lube, is allowing the monument to be built on the property.

The Hagerstown City Council on Tuesday agreed by consensus for the work to be done by the city.
