Warrants filed in carjacking attempt

Warrants have been filed in Washington County District Court for a suspect in an attempted carjacking which occurred late Monday, Hagerstown City Police said.

Jason Wayne Fitzgerald, 20, whose last known address was 1579 Broadfording Road, Clear Spring, is wanted on charges of attempted carjacking, theft and assault.

The incident allegedly occurred at 11:30 p.m. Monday.

Police said the victim and two of his friends told them they stopped to assist a disabled motorist at Dual Highway and Eastern Boulevard.

Fitzgerald and another person asked for a ride to Madison Avenue, police said. Once there, Fitzgerald allegedly demanded the victim's vehicle and began to assault the three people in the car.

The victims sped away with the suspect in the vehicle and drove to the Hagerstown City Police headquarters on Burhans Boulevard.

Fitzgerald then jumped out of the vehicle and ran. The victims pursued him back to the Madison Avenue area in their car.

At that point, the victims told police that Fitzgerald hit the rear window of their car with a baseball bat, shattering the glass.

The victims then went back to the police department.

Police later learned the disabled car on the Dual Highway was stolen.

Fitzgerald, who was still at large this morning, is described as white, 5 feet 11 inches tall, 180 pounds.
