Water slides added as part of new water zone at Jellystone

September 04, 2006

WILLIAMSPORT - The owners of Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park and Resorts announced the opening of two 400-foot-long water slides, part of a new water zone and splash pool.

The slides were christened Rangers Revenge and Picnic Plunge - names chosen among thousands suggested during a yearlong contest, the park said in a news release.

The park said its nearly five-year development plan also includes new cabins and RV sites.

Owner Ron Vitkun said an open house is being planned for Yogi Bear's Water Zone.

He said the water zone and dual water slides are Washington County's first, and are unique for campgrounds in the Mid-Atlantic states.

Vitkun said the park has added more than a dozen staffers because of the multimillion-dollar project.

Tom Riford, president of the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Tim Troxell of the Hagerstown-Washington County Economic Development Commission, praised the development, according to the park's press release.

"The growth of Jellystone Park will continue to have positive impacts to our local economy, with increased employment and spending by guests at Washington County restaurants and retail businesses," Riford is quoted as saying.

Troxell said the project not only retains an existing business but adds the "attraction of new cultural amenities" in the county.

The park, along Lappans Road, offers other attractions, include hiking, biking, an 18-hole mini-golf course, volleyball and basketball courts, and horseshoe pits.
