Volunteer recognized for hours of service

August 31, 2006

Name: Mary Ruth Myers

Age: 88, "But I feel 16."

Residence: Has lived at Park View Knolls in Williamsport for eight years

Where do you volunteer and what do you do there?: I help each day at the Williamsport Nutrition Center, 215 Otho Holland Drive, putting the food together that is taken to approximately 17 people in their homes.

I also help with the lunches served here at the center.

What prompted you to begin volunteering?: "I came to eat at the center one day six years ago and they asked me if I would be willing to help. Now there are two of us and the driver who put the meals together."

What is your biggest reward as a volunteer?: "There was a dinner this summer at the Williamsport Fire Hall where I was recognized for volunteering 734 hours in one year."

What impact has volunteering had on your life?: It just makes me feel good. Plus I walk everywhere since I never drove a car.

What keeps you busy when you're not volunteering?: I visit shut-ins, work lots of jigsaw puzzles and enjoy seek-and-find books.
