Backhoe strikes electrical feed, causes courthouse evacuation

August 31, 2006|by PEPPER BALLARD

A Callas Contractors backhoe operator installing flagpole bases at Washington County Courthouse on Wednesday struck the main electrical feed to the courthouse buildings, forcing the courthouse to close, said Gary Pozzouli, project manager.

Pozzouli said the backhoe struck the line at about 6:15 a.m. in front of the annex on the Summit Avenue side of the building. The courthouse was evacuated at about 10:30 a.m. so the damage could be assessed.

He said that all electricity in the building was shut down at about 11 a.m.

All employees, excluding essential personnel, were evacuated, he said.

Juvenile court and civil hearings were listed on the docket for Wednesday.

"We should be back to normal business" today, he said.

Pozzouli said he did not want to discuss past setbacks in the project, but said that Wednesday was the first time the courthouse had to be shut down because of problems.
