Author O'Connor to speak at library

Author and journalist Bob O'Connor will be at the Washington County Free Library, 100 S. Potomac St. on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 11a.m. to discuss his debut novel, "The Perfect Steel Trap: Harpers Ferry 1859." This historical novel offers an account of the John Brown insurrection through the eyes of two soldiers, taking readers through the preparations, the raid, the trials, execution and aftermath of this historic event.

A book signing will follow the discussion. O'Connor will have books available for purchase or you may bring your own for autographing.

Bob O'Connor lives in Charles Town, W.Va., close to most of the sites of this book. He is a longtime journalist and photographer. His next historical novel follows one of the characters of this book through the Civil War.

Hammond family reunion

The William Kennedy Hammond family reunion will be held at Doub's Woods Park, North Pavilion, on Saturday, Sept. 23, at noon, rain or shine.

Please bring a picnic lunch for your family, old family photos and memories.

This will be the first reunion in 20 years. All relatives are invited to attend.

Children's dance classes

The Women's Club is taking registrations for the 2006-2007 Junior Dance Classes for students in grades six, seven, eight and nine. Instructor Mary Crowell Smith will teach students many of the latest disco swing dances and also the waltz, polka and Latin dances. The first class is Saturday, Sept. 9, at 6 p.m.

Hospital Center Auxiliary fundraiser

The Western Maryland Hospital Auxiliary Inc. will hold a jewelry fundraiser at the hospital center, 1500 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. All items are $5 each. The sale will be held Wednesday, Sept. 6, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 7, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. All proceeds benefit the hospital center and its patients. Women's Club news

The Women's Club, 31 S. Prospect St., will host an Opening Coffee on Thursday, Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. until noon to launch the club's 85th year and introduce the activities planned for the 2006-07 year. In other club news, the Women's Club will host a fall bargain sale on Friday, Sept. 29, and Saturday, Sept. 30, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Gently used clothing, jewelry, household items and shoes will be available for purchase at great prices. Free metered parking will be available in the nearby city lot. Proceeds of the sale help maintain the historic Women's Club building, which has 18 rooms available as low-cost housing for women in our community as well as many activities for the members.

Trip to Sight and Sound Theatre

Christ Lutheran Church in Hagerstown is planning a bus trip to Sight and Sound Theatre on Wednesday, Nov. 15, to see a showing of "The Miracle of Christmas." The event is open to the public - anyone interested in joining should call Sandy Busey at 301-739-7925 for more details.

HHS Class of 1941 Reunion

Hagerstown High School Class of 1941 members will celebrate their 65th-year reunion the weekend of Saturday, Sept. 16, and Sunday, Sept. 17.

The reunion luncheon will be held at the Plaza Hotel at Valley Mall on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 11 a.m. A reunion picnic will be held at Martin L. "Marty" Snook Memorial Park on Halfway Boulevard on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 1 p.m.

Anyone who has not received a letter regarding reunion activities should call 301-791-0283. If you know a spouse of a deceased classmate or anyone who did not graduate, please pass the word that they are most welcome to attend reunion activities.
