New on the scene

Talk about pressure. Faded Memories' first gig was at 43 South during the Western Maryland Blues Fest. At the time, all of the bandmates were in high school - lower classmen, at that.

But they survived. "They were really into our stuff," said the band's 16-year-old drummer Jovann Carter.

Several gigs later, the three-man band has grown to five and now has four performance-ready originals in their repertoire.

Songwriter Ross Semler, 15, said his favorite song was "The Beginning," a song he recently wrote after a five-month relationship with an honesty-impaired girlfriend.

"That song is about a new beginning," Ross said.

The band's original members - Ross, Jovann and Roger Pleasant, 16 - were perennial performers at The Maryland Theatre's amateur night on Wednesdays. Right now, Ross's mother and her fianc, local musician Al Masoon, are handling the band's gigs.
