Hubert worked in sales for many years. He was previously employed with the YMCA. He retired from the Maryland Correctional Institution. He also owned the Downsville Auction House and served as auctioneer.

He was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

He was a member of the Hagerstown YMCA and the Funkstown Moose.

He is survived by three brothers, Charles T. Shifler and Harlan Shifler, both of Boonsboro, Md., and Richard Shifler of Temple, Ariz.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Quentin J. Fleming will officiate. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m.

Sylvia J. McKinney, 57

MARCH 24, 1949-AUG. 27, 2006

CASCADE - Sylvia Jean McKinney, 57, of Cascade, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006.

Born March 24, 1949, in Cedar Grove, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Sylvia Patton.

Her husband, Denny Floyd McKinney Sr., died June 11, 2003.

She worked as a real estate agent.

She is survived by one son, Barry Rines of Cascade; one stepdaughter, Melissa McKinney; one stepson, Denny McKinney Jr.; one sister, Shirlene Breashears of West Virginia; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Charlene Harris and Phyllis Coleman.

Services will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick, Md.

Friends may call Wednesday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Floral tributes are welcome and may be delivered to the Chapel Mausoleum.

Arrangements are by Resthaven Funeral Services, Skkot Cody P.A., Frederick.

Esther J. Byers, 84

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Esther J. Byers, 84, a resident of Shook Home, and formerly of 1399 Brechbill Road, Chambersburg, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006, at the home.

Born Dec. 29, 1921, in Lurgan Township, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Elmer and Annie Cramer Keefer.

Her husband, Melvin C. Byers, died June 4, 2000.

She had been employed at the former H.J. Heinz Co. in Chambersburg, retiring at the time of the plant's closing.

She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Pleasant Hall, Pa.

She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis M. Swartz of Newville, Pa., and Leitha J. Rountree of Chambersburg; four grandchildren, Lorie Swartz of Alexandria, Va., Stacey Swartz of Harrisburg, Pa., Frederick Rountree of Williston, Vt., and Elspeth Rountree of Manhattan, N.Y.; and one great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Jacob Keefer, Paul Keefer and Oscar Keefer.

Services will be Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg. The Revs. Ellis Kretschmer and Mark A. Werner will officiate. Burial will follow in Norland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday one hour prior to the service.

John E. Wetzel, 75

AUG. 25, 1931-AUG. 26, 2006

QUINCY, Pa. - John E. Wetzel, 75, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, and formerly of Blue Ridge Avenue, Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, at the nursing home.

Born Aug. 25, 1931, in Fairfield, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry and Mary Turner Wetzel.

He attended Fairfield schools.

His wife, Ruth (Miller) Wetzel, died Nov. 22, 2002. They were married March 5, 1955.

He was employed as a plumber for Fridinger-Ritchie Co. Inc. of Hagerstown. He retired Jan. 1, 1992.

He competed in shooting matches at Mount Holly Springs, Pa., where he won "King of the Mountain."

He is survived by four daughters, Karen Casanova of Blue Ridge Summit, Roxanne Gipe and Penny Kent, both of Waynesboro, Pa., and Bobbi Jo Mong; two sons, Steve Wetzel of Blue Ridge Summit and Jeff Wetzel of Waynesboro; three sisters, Margaret Horner of Rocky Ridge, Md., and Virginia Rentzel and Mabel Wetzel of Fairfield; three brothers, Ralph Wetzel of Blue Ridge Summit, Stanley Wetzel of Fairfield and Richard Wetzel of Friends Creek, Md.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Fox and Goldie Wetzel; and one brother, Harry Wetzel.

Services and burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Verna L. Cassidy, 79

SEPT. 19, 1926-AUG. 26, 2006

FREDERICK, Md. - Verna Leona Heino Cassidy, 79, of 8200 Blue Heron Drive 1-B, and formerly of Waynesboro, Pa., died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 19, 1926, in New York Mills, Minn., she was the daughter of the late Victor and Selena Matalamaki Heino.

She graduated from New York Mills High School with the class of 1944.
