Former planner nominated for farmland board in Berkeley County

August 28, 2006|by MATTHEW UMSTEAD

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Leaders of the Eastern Panhandle Conservation District have asked the Berkeley County Commission to appoint former Planning Commission member Anthony Petrucci as their representative to the county's Farmland Protection Board.

If appointed, Petrucci, a former planning commissioner, would replace James Moore, whose term expires Oct. 31.

Though Petrucci owns a 65-acre farm, he told commissioners that farming did not generate his primary income. He also later noted he was in favor of growth, but not zoning, as a land-use planning tool.

Commissioners delayed voting on the appointment until Petrucci formally applies for the position and submits a financial disclosure statement.

Earlier in the meeting, County Administrator Deborah Hammond acknowledged to Commissioner Steven C. Teufel that the disclosure statements had not been obtained from other applicants for various boards and committees as had been previously discussed in another meeting.
