WILLIAMSPORT - The festival formerly known as C&O Canal Days officially kicks off this weekend under a new name, Williamsport Days.

About 120 vendors are expected for Williamsport Days - Saturday, Aug. 26, and Sunday, Aug. 27, at Byron Memorial Park and the Cushwa Basin this year - town officials said. The town of Williamsport and the National Park Service are co-organizing the event.

The town already has hosted several events, including a bike race and band concert, to help launch the official start to the inaugural festival. The town will host a free picnic and pool party today at 5:30 p.m., followed by a free concert by the U.S. Navy Commodores at 7 p.m. at Byron Memorial Park. An ox roast and street dance are scheduled for Friday night.




Williamsport's schedule



Daily activities include a flea market and displays at Springfield Farm Barn, a book sale at Williamsport Memorial Library, and a carnival at the park throughout the day.

Saturday, Aug. 26

Vendors, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Gymnastics demonstration, 11 a.m.

Magic show, 1:30 p.m. in the Community Building

Karate demonstration, 2 p.m.

Stoney Creek Band will perform bluegrass music, 3 p.m.

The Rhythm Kings band performs, 5 to 7 p.m. at the gazebo

Sunday, Aug. 27

Vendors, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Antique car cruise-in, 1 to 5 p.m., starting at Wolfe's on the Square, 1 W. Potomac St., and ending at the Cushwa River Basin.

Gymnastics demonstration, 2 p.m.

Karate demonstration, 2 p.m.

Magic show, 2 p.m. in the Community Building

Stoney Creek Band will perform bluegrass music, 3 p.m.

Events at Cushwa Basin

Activities will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Daily activities include Lock No. 44 demonstrations, mule and blacksmithing demonstrations, Civil War re-enactors and displays in the National Park Service tent. There also will be discussions on women's roles in conflict at 2 p.m. both days.

Saturday, Aug. 26

C&O Canal history discussion, 2:30 p.m.

Wildcat Regiment Band performs, noon and 4 p.m.

Sunday, Aug. 27

Walking tour, 10 a.m.

Edgar Howell and the Pioneer Band, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Songs and stories by Matthew Dodd, 2 to 4 p.m.

Founding Fathers of the National Parks, 2:30 p.m.

ADMISSION: Free. A trolley is available to transport visitors between Byron Memorial Park and the Cushwa Basin. The fare ranges from 50 cents to $1.
