Growers need citizens' help

August 22, 2006

For most citizens, the steamy days of August have been an inconvenience, forcing them to spend more time in front of a fan or an air conditioner.

But for Washington County's farmers, the combination of heat and a recent lack of rain threatens to affect their livelihoods. We recommend that citizens do what they can to help by purchasing fruit from local orchards and vegetables from roadside stands or both at the Hagerstown City Market on Saturday mornings.

It might be easier to get that bag of apples from the supermarket, but the extra trouble it takes to drive to an orchard will be rewarded with a home-grown product and the satisfaction that comes from supporting other members of this community.

The farms and orchards of Washington County provide much of what we know as the quality of life here. It's time to return that great favor.
