School opening delayed to Aug. 31

August 21, 2006

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - Jefferson High School students will not return to school Monday, Aug. 28, when the rest of the county's public schools open, according to a press release from Superintendent R. Steven Nichols.

Renovations to the high school are not complete, Nichols said. The high school is expected to open for students on Thursday, Aug. 31.

Jefferson High School's Ninth Grade Complex, which is adjacent to the high school, will open Aug. 28, along with the rest of the system's schools, according to the release.

Nichols says in the release that the late opening of the high school is being caused by a delay in renovation work. Material deliveries for the renovation were delayed and, once work is completed, the renovated areas need to be cleaned so teachers can set up their classrooms, according to the release.

Jefferson High School teachers will report to work each day at the regular time beginning Wednesday, according to the release. Opening ceremonies for all school system staff will be held in the high school's auditorium that day, as previously scheduled.

The high school will be open Wednesday, Aug. 30, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for students and parents to pick up schedules and find assigned rooms. Students and parents will not be permitted to enter the construction areas.
