Hagerstown Community College's Center for Continuing Education is introducing a new certification program in professional bookkeeping.

The American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers established the Certified Bookkeeper credential, which consists of testing in six subject areas, signing a code of ethics and demonstrating two years of work experience as a bookkeeper.

Students will prepare for the certified bookkeeper examination by mastering the skills and knowledge required in such areas as book and tax depreciation, payroll, recording and costing out merchandise inventory, and internal controls and fraud prevention.

Classes begin Tuesday, Sept. 19. Course instructor will be Tory Van Reenen, owner of Banks & Banks Bookkeeping & Accounting Service.
