WAYNESBORO, Pa. - A man was killed Saturday after a branch fell off a tree that was being cut down and struck him in the back of the head, Franklin County Deputy Coroner Kenneth L. Peiffer said Saturday night.

Gerald H. Gelsinger, 71, of 12146 Gearhart Road in Shady Grove, Pa., was pronounced dead at Waynesboro Hospital, Peiffer said.

The accident happened shortly after noon, he said.

Peiffer said Gelsinger was watching the tree being cut down in the 3000 block of McDowell Road in Waynesboro when he was struck.

The top of the tree was rotted, broke off and hit Gelsinger, Peiffer said.

No other information was available Saturday night.
