Belt places second at junior worlds



BEIJING, China - Tony Belt, a 2005 Berkeley Springs graduate, placed second in the long jump for Team USA at the 2006 IAAF World Junior Championships on Wednesday.

Belt, who will be a sophomore at the University of Louisville, captured the silver medal with his personal-best leap of 26 feet, 1 inch.

Belt was the 2005 Herald-Mail Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year.

Gary Brown 5-Miler



The 25th annual Gary Brown Memorial C&O Canal 5-Mile Run will be held Aug. 26, beginning and ending at Riverbottom Park in Williamsport.

Race-day registration begins at 7 a.m. The race starts at 8.

Racquetball Fall League



The Waynesboro Area YMCA is holding registration for its fall racquetball league, a recreational/competitive league with divisions for players of all ability levels. Players must be ninth grade and above. The entry deadline is Sept. 16. For information, contact James Bailes at 717-762-6012.

YMCA Basketball League



The Waynesboro Area YMCA is holding registration for its City Basketball League. The league is open to anyone ninth grade and over who is not involved in high school sports. Players do not need to have a YMCA membership to play. The registration deadline is Oct. 14. For information, contact the YMCA at 717-762-6012.

HCC ticket prices set



Ticket prices have been set for Hagerstown Community College athletic events for the 2006-07 school year.

For regular-season contests and regular-season tournaments, admission is $5 for adults over 17 and $2 for youths ageS 6-17 and seniors ages 55 and older with a Green and White card. Card applications are available at the ARCC front desk. HCC staff and students with valid ID will be admitted at no charge.

St. James Golf Classic



The 11th Annual Saint James School Golf Classic will be held on Sept. 18 at Cress Creek Golf and Country Club in Shepherdstown, W.Va.

The tournament, which supports student scholarships, is limited to the first 100 golfers. Entry fee is $125 and includes greens fee, cart, ditty bag, a boxed lunch, an awards reception and dinner, along with numerous prizes. Registration begins at 10 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at noon. The format is a four-person scramble with USGA scramble handicap rules.

Prizes will be awarded for low gross and low net team scores, closest-to-the-pin for men and women, longest drive on the fairway, straightest drive, a putting contest and other various contests. The first-place low net team has the option to designate the home state of the scholarship recipient.

All-night softball tournament



There will be a men's all-night softball tournament held Sept. 8-9 at Clearbrook Park in Clearbrook, Va. It is a bracket tournament with the top two teams advancing to a championship game. For information, call 540-868-4032, 540-327-7898 or 540-722-1065.

YMCA Volleyball League



The Chambersburg YMCA's 2006-07 Fall/Winter Volleyball League is accepting team registrations until Sept. 11.

The leagues will include Coed A, Coed B+, Coed B and Men's divisions. League play will begin Sept. 25 and run through mid-March 2007. Team fees for all divisions are $170 with an individual non-member fee of $77.25.

A captain's meeting will be held Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. Each team must have a representative at the meeting to discuss new rules and regulations as well as any additional suggestions. Tri-State Thunder tryouts



The Tri-State Thunder girls select fast-pitch organization will hold tryouts for its 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U teams today and Tuesday from 6-8 p.m., and the next two Sundays from 5-8 p.m. Tryouts will be held at the Pinesburg Softball Complex in Williamsport. Youth soccer team openings



The Hagerstown Soccer Club U9 girls team still has roster openings. The team will play in the Central Maryland Short-Sided League this fall and games begin the weekend of Sept. 9. Girls born between Aug. 1, 1997 and July 31, 1998 are eligible to play. For more information, call 301-791-0382.
