Couple dies in motorcycle crash

August 17, 2006

A Keedysville couple was killed Wednesday in a motorcycle crash on Md. 67 at the intersection of Kaetzel Road, according to Maryland State Police in Hagerstown.

Albert Sylvester Crummitt Jr., 49, the driver of the motorcycle, and Sharon Louise Crummitt, 49, the motorcycle passenger, were taken to Washington County Hospital following the 2:40 p.m. accident. They died at the hospital, police said.

Albert Crummitt Jr. lost control of the 2004 Harley-Davidson motorcycle he was riding when he attempted to stop to avoid colliding with a tractor-trailer traveling in front of him in the southbound lane, police said.

The motorcycle went onto its side and slid into the rear of the truck, police said.

The 1985 International truck, which was pulling a bulk trailer loaded with powdered cement, had been slowed or stopped on the road as its driver, Dean Alan Poffenberger, 39, of Hagerstown, waited for work crews to move signs, police said.

Poffenberger was making a delivery to a work crew repaving Kaetzel Road. He was not injured, and he will not be charged, police said.
