Legion essay contest winners recognized

FUNKSTOWN - The winners of this year's essay contest sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary Dixon Troxell Unit 211 in Funkstown recently were honored.

The topic this year was "What Freedom Means To Me."

The winners from Emma K. Doub Elementary School are Kenny Catchings, second place (third and fourth grades); Joshua Rivera, second place (fifth and sixth grades); Estefany Zambrano, first place (third and fourth grades); Alex Wiles, third place (fifth and sixth grades); Taylor Baer, third place (third and fourth grades); Wanlia Walker from E. Russell Hicks, first place (seventh and eighth grades); and Tyler Martz-Keller, first place (fifth and sixth grades).

Martz-Keller also was a winner in the Western Maryland district.

More than 200 children from Emma K. Doub, E. Russell Hicks and Bester participated in the competition.

Bonnie Miller is Americanism chairwoman for Post 211 auxiliary.
