A day at Harpers Ferry

August 13, 2006|by JULIE E. GREENE

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - The presence of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and the convergence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers and are just two aspects of the many things to do in this historic West Virginia town on a sunny day.

Local people and tourists enjoy fishing, tubing, canoeing and kayaking on the rivers, especially after a recent heat wave.

The national park offers opportunities for hiking and learning about area history.

The park will host the Niagara Movement Centennial commemoration from Thursday, Aug. 17, to Sunday, Aug. 20. The event honoring the early 20th-century civil rights movement includes dramatic re-enactments, panel discussions and entertainment. For more information, see page E1 and today's A section.

Here's a look at what was happening in Harpers Ferry last Sunday.
