Forums to give exposure to county candidates

August 12, 2006

Forty-six candidates running for five offices have been invited to participate in two forums Wednesday and Thursday at Hagerstown Community College's Kepler Theater.

The forums will begin both nights at 7 p.m.

The forums are sponsored by The Herald-Mail, the League of Women Voters of Washington County, HCC and Antietam Cable.

On Wednesday, the 24 candidates for Washington County Commissioners have been invited to participate in a two-hour forum that will be broadcast live on Antietam Cable channel 99.

The 12 Democratic candidates will take the stage first. Candidates will be asked questions by a League of Women Voters moderator. Written questions from the audience will be accepted. At the conclusion of the question-and-answer session, each candidate will be given time to make a statement.

Republican candidates then will take the stage and the same format will be followed.

On Thursday, candidates for the offices of Washington County Board of Education, sheriff, state's attorney and House of Delegates Subdistrict 2C will participate. The forum also will be broadcast live on Antietam Cable channel 99.

Board of education candidates and the candidates for sheriff and Subdistrict 2C will participate in question-and-answer sessions and will be given time to make statements. Candidates for state's attorney will not participate in a question-and-answer session, but will be given time to address the audience.

Both forums will be rebroadcast on the following dates and times:

Wednesday's forum will air Thursday, Aug. 24, Tuesday, Aug. 29, and Tuesday, Sept. 5, at 8 p.m. on Antietam Cable channel 19.

Thursday's forum will air Friday, Aug. 25, Thursday, Aug. 31, and Thursday, Sept. 7, at 8 p.m. on channel 19.

Both forums will air back to back Monday, Sept. 11, beginning at 7 p.m.
